Every year, millions of tons of plastic end up in the oceans. Plastic bags, bottles and straws travel with the wind and with rivers until they reach the sea.
This is a big problem for sea animals. Sea turtles, for example, often eat plastic bags because the bags look like jellyfish, their favorite food. Birds and fish also eat small pieces of plastic, and many of them get sick.
Plastic does not disappear quickly. A plastic bottle can stay in the sea for more than four hundred years!
The good news is that we can help. Some countries do not allow plastic bags in supermarkets anymore. In many cities, volunteers clean the beaches every month. And each of us can do small things: carry a cloth bag, drink from a reusable bottle and say “no, thank you” to plastic straws.
