Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. Nobody lives there all year, but about 1,000 scientists stay there even in the dark winter. Life at a research station has many rules.
Outside, everyone must wear several layers of warm clothes, because the temperature can drop below minus 60 degrees. Scientists shouldn't go outside alone, and they have to tell the team where they are.
There are rules to protect nature, too. Visitors mustn't touch the penguins or the seals; they have to stay at least five meters away. And nobody can leave garbage behind — everything has to go back home on the ship.
Is it hard? Yes. But the scientists say it is worth it. “You don't have to love the cold,” says one researcher, “but you should love adventure. Here you see things that almost nobody in the world has seen.”
