In 1979, a sixteen-year-old boy named Jadav Payeng walked on a small sandy island in a big river in India. There were no trees there, and many snakes died in the hot sun. Jadav was very sad, and he decided to do something.
He started to plant trees on the island — one by one, every day. More than forty years later, he is still doing it. He has planted thousands of trees, and the empty island has become a real forest.
Many animals have come to live in the forest. Birds, deer and rhinos live there, and elephants have visited it many times. People call Jadav “the Forest Man of India.”
Jadav has received important prizes, but he still lives a simple life. His story has taught people around the world that one person can make a big change.
