A honeybee lives in a hive with about 50,000 other bees. Every bee in the hive has a job.
On a sunny morning, a worker bee leaves the hive and flies from flower to flower. It drinks nectar, a sweet juice inside the flower, and keeps it in a special “honey stomach.” A bee visits up to 100 flowers on one trip!
Back at the hive, the bee passes the nectar to a younger bee. This bee chews it for about half an hour and then puts it into a small wax cell. But the nectar is still too wet, so the bees fan it with their wings until the water dries out. When the honey is ready, a bee closes the cell with wax.
A bee colony needs honey for the winter, when there are no flowers. Beekeepers take only the extra honey, so the bees always have enough. A good beekeeper doesn't get hurt often, because he wears a special suit and moves slowly and calmly.
