In Israel, people use two calendars. The first is the international calendar, which starts in January and ends in December. The second is the Hebrew calendar, which is based on the moon.
A month in the Hebrew calendar is about 29 or 30 days — the time from one new moon to the next. Twelve moon months are shorter than a sun year, so about every three years the Hebrew calendar adds a whole extra month!
That is why the holidays move around. Rosh Hashanah, for example, can come in September or in October. Hanukkah is usually in December, and Passover is always in the spring, in March or April.
In Israel, the weekend is also different. Most people work from Sunday to Thursday, and the weekend is Friday and Saturday. In many other countries, people rest on Saturday and Sunday.
