Many people think that summer comes when the Earth is closer to the sun. Surprisingly, that is not true! The Earth is actually closest to the sun in early January — in the middle of our winter.
The real reason is the Earth's tilt. Our planet leans to one side as it travels around the sun. From June to August, the northern half of the Earth leans toward the sun. The sun is high in the sky, the days are long, and it is summer in Israel, Europe and North America.
At the same time, the southern half leans away from the sun. So when Israelis go to the beach in July, kids in Australia and Argentina wear coats and scarves! For them, December is a hot summer month, and many families eat their holiday meals outside.
Twice a year, in March and in September, day and night are almost equal everywhere on Earth. These days are called the equinoxes — from the Latin words for “equal night.”
