For almost 4,000 years, the tallest building in the world was the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. It is about 140 meters high. In the last 150 years, cities have grown taller and taller.
In 1931, the Empire State Building in New York became the highest building on Earth. It was 381 meters tall, and it kept the record for almost 40 years.
Today, the record belongs to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. At 828 meters, it is over twice as tall as the Empire State Building. From the top, the city below looks smaller than a toy town.
But the race is not over. In Saudi Arabia, builders are working on a tower that will be even higher — the Jeddah Tower, planned to be about 1,000 meters tall. Will it be the greatest building ever? Engineers say that the biggest problem is not the height, but the wind.
