Amelia Earhart grew up in Kansas, in the United States, more than a hundred years ago. As a girl, she saw her first airplane at a fair. She thought it was ugly and boring!

Everything changed in 1920. Amelia went to an air show in California and paid ten dollars for a short flight. Later, she said that as soon as she left the ground, she knew she had to fly.

She took flying lessons and worked at different jobs to pay for them. Soon she bought her own plane — a bright yellow plane that she called “The Canary.”

In 1932, Amelia became the first woman to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean. The flight took about fifteen hours, and she landed in a field in Northern Ireland. People all over the world read about her in the newspapers.

In 1937, she tried to fly around the world. Over the Pacific Ocean, her plane disappeared, and nobody ever found it. But her story lived on. Amelia showed the world that girls could do anything.
