On July 16, 1969, three American astronauts left the Earth in the rocket Apollo 11. Their names were Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. The trip to the Moon took four days.
On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the Moon in a small spaceship, the Eagle. Collins didn't land. He stayed in the big spaceship and flew around the Moon.
A few hours later, Armstrong opened the door and climbed down a ladder. He was the first person on the Moon! He said, “That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” About 600 million people watched him on TV.
The two astronauts walked on the Moon for about two hours. They collected rocks, took photos and left an American flag there. On July 24, all three astronauts came back home safely.
