Ants are small, but they are amazing animals. Scientists think there are more than ten thousand different kinds of ants in the world. They live almost everywhere, except in very cold places like Antarctica.
Ants live in big groups called colonies. A colony can have millions of ants! Every colony has one or more queens. The queen's only job is to lay eggs — sometimes thousands of eggs in one day.
Most of the other ants are workers. They have many different jobs. Some workers look for food and carry leaves, seeds and dead insects back home. Other workers build long tunnels under the ground, and some take care of the babies.
How do they carry such big things? An ant is very strong for its size: it can lift objects fifty times heavier than its own body. That is like a child carrying a car!
An ant colony also works together as a team. When one ant finds food, it marks the way back home with a special smell. The other ants follow the smell, and soon hundreds of them are working together. Maybe people can learn a few lessons from these tiny insects.
