In winter, when it is twelve o'clock noon in Tel Aviv, it is five o'clock in the morning in New York, and seven o'clock in the evening in Tokyo. How can it be different times at the same moment?
The answer is the Earth's spin. The Earth turns around once every 24 hours, so the sun rises at different times in different places. To keep things simple, the world is divided into 24 time zones. When you travel east, you move your watch forward; when you travel west, you move it back.
Before 1884, every city had its own time, and train timetables were a mess. A train could leave one city at half past two and arrive in the next city at quarter past two — before it left!
Today, time zones help airplanes, trains and phone calls work smoothly. But they can still be confusing. If you call your cousin in Los Angeles at nine o'clock in the morning, he is fast asleep — it is still eleven o'clock at night there!
