Every year in April, thousands of bees leave the hive and fly from flower to flower. They look for nectar, a sweet liquid inside flowers. A bee drinks the nectar with its long tongue and keeps it in a special stomach.
When the bee returns to the hive, it passes the nectar to other bees. These bees chew it for about half an hour. Then they spread it inside small wax cells. The bees fan the cells with their wings, and the water in the nectar slowly disappears. The nectar turns into thick, golden honey.
Finally, the bees close each cell with a thin layer of wax. In winter, when no flowers grow, the bees eat the honey and stay alive.
Bees also help people. When a bee visits a flower, it carries pollen to the next flower. This helps plants make fruit and seeds. Without bees, farmers lose many of their crops. So the next time you see a bee, remember: it works hard for all of us!
