Our town library is not like other libraries. It has one strict rule: no talking at all. Not even a whisper! Nobody knows who made the rule, but everybody follows it.
Mrs. Stein, the librarian, never speaks. If you need help, you write a note, and she writes an answer. The kids don't mind. They say the quiet helps them read.
One afternoon, a little boy comes in with his mother. He doesn't know the rule. He sees a book about dinosaurs and shouts, “Mom! Look! A T. rex!” Everybody looks up. Nobody says a word. The boy's face turns red.
Mrs. Stein walks over to him. She doesn't get angry. She smiles and writes on a note: “I love dinosaurs too. They aren't quiet, but you can be.” The boy laughs without a sound and sits down to read.
Before they leave, his mother writes in the guest book: “Nothing is better than a good book in a quiet place.”
