The Eiffel Tower was built in Paris more than 130 years ago, for a big world fair in 1889. It was designed by the company of an engineer named Gustave Eiffel, and it was named after him.
The tower is made of iron. More than 18,000 iron pieces were used, and they were joined together with millions of small metal pins called rivets. The work was finished in about two years.
At first, many people in Paris hated the tower. They thought it was ugly. The plan was to take it down after twenty years. But the tower was saved because it was very useful: radio signals were sent from the top.
Today, the Eiffel Tower is visited by millions of people every year. To protect it from rust, it is painted every seven years — and about 60 tons of paint are needed each time!
