Last summer, my family tried something new — a picnic at night! In the evening, when the sun went down, we put everything in the car and drove to a big field outside the city.
Dad found a good spot under an old olive tree. Mom put a blanket on the grass, and my little brother decorated it with flowers from the field. We had sandwiches, apples, bananas and cold lemonade in plastic cups. For dessert, Mom took a box of ice cream out of the cooler.
Slowly, the sky became dark. First we saw the moon, round and bright. Then the stars appeared, one after another, until there were thousands of them. Dad brought a book about the sky and showed us how to find the North Star. I drew the stars on a piece of paper with a pencil.
Suddenly, we heard a strange noise near the tree. My brother hid behind Mom. Then a small cat came out of the dark, looked at our food and sat down next to the blanket. We laughed and gave it some milk in a cup.
It was almost midnight when we drove back to our house. My brother fell asleep in the car, but I looked at the moon the whole way home. It was the best picnic ever.
