1 On a small hill above the sea stands an old white lighthouse. For forty years, a man named Shimon took care of it. He was the lighthouse keeper.

2 In the past, lighthouses were very important. There was no GPS, and ships could not see the rocks near the coast at night. The strong light at the top of the lighthouse warned the ships and showed them the way. Every evening, Shimon climbed the 120 steps to the top and turned on the light. In stormy weather, he stayed awake all night.

3 Today, the light turns on by itself, and the lighthouse does not need a keeper. But Shimon still lives in the little house next to it. Last week, our class visited him. He showed us the huge lamp and told us stories about storms and ships. We also saw his old notebook, where he wrote about every ship he saw.

4 “Were you ever lonely?” I asked him. Shimon smiled. “Never,” he said. “I had the sea, the birds and my books. And every ship that passed safely was like a friend.”
