1 Every autumn, something amazing happens in the sky over Israel. Millions of birds fly over the country on their way from Europe to Africa. In the spring, they fly back north again. This long trip is called migration.

2 One of these birds is the white stork. Storks are big birds with long red legs and a long red beak. They cannot fly for many hours by moving their wings, because it uses too much energy. Instead, they look for warm air that goes up, and they ride on it.

3 Last October, Noam and his grandfather went to the Hula Valley to watch the birds. They got up very early and sat quietly near the lake. At first, they saw only a few ducks. Then Grandpa pointed at the sky. Hundreds of storks were flying over them in a big circle!

4 “Why do they fly over Israel?” asked Noam. Grandpa explained that Israel is like a bridge between three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa. The birds stop here to rest and eat before the long trip over the desert. Noam took many photos. “This is better than any movie,” he said.
