The Dead Sea is a very special lake in Israel. It is the lowest place on land in the whole world — more than 400 meters below the level of the sea.

The water of the Dead Sea is very, very salty. Because of the salt, fish and plants can't live in it. That is why people call it the Dead Sea.

But the salt also does something fun: people float on the water! You can lie on your back and read a newspaper, and you don't sink.

Many tourists visit the Dead Sea every year. They swim, put black mud on their skin and take funny photos. Just remember — don't put your head under the water. The salt hurts your eyes!
