The Western Wall

הכותל המערבי

In the Old City of Jerusalem stands one of the most famous walls in the world: the Western Wall, or the Kotel. It is about 2,000 years old.

The Kotel was built by King Herod as part of a huge wall around the Temple Mount. The Temple itself was destroyed, but this part of the wall survived. Some of its stones are enormous — one of them weighs more than 500 tons!

Today, millions of people from all over the world visit the Kotel every year. Many write prayers on small pieces of paper and put them in the cracks between the stones.

What happens to all the notes? Twice a year, before Passover and before Rosh Hashanah, workers collect them carefully. The notes are not thrown away — they are buried on the Mount of Olives.
